Meeting Notice – June 16, 2010

Joe Gettys will be our demonstrator. Joe is no stranger to us in the Atlanta area. His skill on the lathe and his humorous wit makes for an entertaining demo. Joe will demonstrate turning a bowl using the Easy Wood Tools Carbide scrapers. If time permits, expect to see a Xmas ornament as well.

Guild Talent at May 2010 Meeting

Guild members brought in a nice variety of turnings this month.  Mike Peace won the President’s Challenge with his maple bowl for the nicest turning without the benefit of sandpaper!

Thanks to Denis Delehanty and Oliver Buettner for taking the great pictures!  And if you want to see a larger picture of the turnings, just “click” on the thumbnail image below.

Rudolph Lopez Presents at AWG, May 2010

Rudy Lopez provided a great demonstration on turning an end grain vase from a log at the May 19th Guild meeting at Woodcraft.  He kept everyone on the edge of their seats overtime!   Here is the handout Rudy provided us and a couple links he referenced during the demonstration.  Thanks Rudy!

AWG Presidents Message – 5/19/10 Meeting

AWG members

May Demonstration.  This Wednesday, 5/19/10, we will host Rudy Lopez from Tampa Florida. Rudy will turn an end grain vase as his demonstration piece. Rudy was at last month’s Southern States Symposium in Gainesville and proved to be an excellent demonstrator!  You can read more about him and his attitudes towards woodturning here:  http://atlantawoodturnersguild.org/wp/2010/05/meeting-notice-may-19-2010/#more-904

Editor for AWG Bulletin.  I am Happy to announce that Betty Fugate has volunteered to act as our editor. She will be assisting the club by compiling announcements and articles written by club members and emailing these to the membership around the first week each month. Our objective is to provide communication and a reminder that we still exist between the meetings. We will keep it to a few emails with solid content.

Website.  In case you haven’t checked out the new website, it can be viewed here. One of my favorite features is the slideshow of the Show and Tell pieces.  http://atlantawoodturnersguild.org/wp/

”Got wood?”  I am proud to announce that our club has grown quite well this year and we now have over 50 members, making us one of the larger clubs in Georgia!  One thoughtful point recently raised to the board is that our raffle is not as well stocked as it might be for a club of this size.  Aside from dues, the raffle is our only source of income and we would like to see it continue to do well and grow!

To this end, I would solicit the membership to bring in wood, tools, turning kits, etc. which you do not expect to use and contribute these materials to the raffles.  If you get first dibs on a neighbor’s fallen tree, grab an extra piece for the club!  I have seen this process work well for the Georgia Association of Woodturners and believe it will help fill out our raffle. Thank you for your assistance!

 Cheers,

Kurt

Meeting Notice – May 19, 2010

Rudy Lopez from Tampa, Florida will demonstrate an end grain vase. He began working with his hands at a very young age and began to develop his creative eye through photography, his first artistic pursuit. With an education in drafting and design, and drawing inspiration from the surroundings of his youth, Rudy began his relationship with wood as a craftsman of fine furniture and cabinetry. His desire to explore wood-turning began to develop when he received a natural-edge bowl as a Christmas gift from his best friend a couple of years ago. His natural sense of curiosity has led him to explore the techniques necessary to transform wood from a simple rough chunk into an object of aesthetic beauty. Rudy’s pieces have been featured in the "Rounding The Four Corners" exhibit 2008, and "Restful Places-Cremation Urns and Objects" 2009, at the AAW Gallery of Wood Art in St. Paul, Minnesota. Go to http://www.rudolphlopez.com to view more of Rudy’s work.
