April 2010 Board Minutes

ATLANTA WOODTURNERS GUILD

BOARD MINUTES

April 2010

The scheduled board meeting for the Atlanta Woodturning Guild met with quorum in place and was called to order by the President Kurt Whitley at 5.30pm 21 April 2010.

A motion to accept the March minutes as written was presented by Bob Greenberg and one correction was requested:

Jim Hardy has accepted the position of Librarian – not Treasurer – to replace Tom Smith who resigned.

The motion was seconded by Chris Burfield and with this correction the minutes were accepted unanimously.

Treasury Report

Doug Lichliter reported that we have $3500.00 in the bank with 50 paid members.

General Business

The main topic of discussion was the current By-laws of AWG. It was felt that the current By-laws are too long and complicated and to a degree confuse the goals and objectives of AWG. After much discussion the Board generally agreed that we should adopt the simpler By-laws available from AAW. These are much shorter, simpler and fulfill AWG goals and objectives much more satisfactorily.

A motion was presented by Mike Peace

  1. That AWG should proceed to amend existing By-laws to be modeled after the Standard By-laws for Local Chapters of the American Association of Woodturners Inc.

The motion was seconded by Harvey Meyer presented for vote and approved unanimously.

AWG has been approached by the Georgia State Fair – to be held in October this year – to donate $200.00 to be used as prize money in the woodturning judging. It was noted that all woodturning clubs in Georgia have been approached for a donation and the general consensus was that we should contribute.

A motion was presented by Harvey Meyer

  1. That AWG donate $200.00 as prize money to the Georgia State Fair.

The motion was seconded by Chris Burfield presented for vote and approved unanimously.

Communication with the membership was continued from last month’s meeting with the subject of a newsletter for the membership. It was decided that such an item was not viable at this time due to obtaining a volunteer editor for the newsletter as well as editorial content. It was considered that AWG is not large enough at this point to substantiate a newsletter and the subject was tabled for further analysis at future meetings. However, in order to communicate on a continuing basis it was decided that there should be two communiqués per month. One being the

Presidents message after each meeting, plus another mid-month between the scheduled meetings. These would be posted on the website and also as a blanket e-mail to the AWG membership.

Webmaster Dave Roselius announced that the new website for AWG is now up and running at

www.atlantawoodturnersguild.org and the new format is as announced at the February 2010 Board meeting and recorded in the minutes. The board had a chance to see a preview of the new site and the layout prior to publishing live. It is recommended that all members of AWG view the site as it is a great improvement and well worth viewing. It is far more interactive and compliments AWG and our objectives to the utmost. It will be used as our main communication arm to the membership so everyone should check the site on a regular basis.

Congratulations to Dave for a lot of hard work, long hours and creativity in creating the site.

Bob Greenberg brought up the subject of AWG’s annual project on making toys for the holiday season. This is our third year and it is time for us purchase supplies and to start the planning and implementation for the 2010 program.

A motion was presented by Bob Greenberg

  1. That AWG spend $250.00 towards supplies for the annual toys for the holiday season project.

The motion was seconded by Chris Burfield and after discussion the motion passed with six affirmative votes and one negative.

The President asked if there was any further business. There being none the meeting was adjourned at 6.30pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Chris Burfield

Secretary
