ATLANTA WOODTURNERS GUILD BOARD MINUTES
September 2009
The scheduled board meeting for the Atlanta Woodturning Guild met with a quorum in place and was called to order by the President Bob Greenberg at 5.35pm 16 September 2009.
A motion to accept the August meeting minutes as written was presented and accepted unanimously.
Treasury Report
Doug Lichliter reported that the Guild has $2395.00 in the treasury and remains solvent.
Program Chair
Harvey Meyer announced that Sorby will be providing a complimentary demonstrator for the October meeting. At the meeting Sorby will no doubt offer a discount on any Sorby product purchased that evening.
General Business
Bob Greenberg had previously sent an e-mail to all board members outlining a discussion he had had with a representative of the Woodworking Show. They are scheduled to present their show in Atlanta the 29, 30 & 31st of January 2010. They have offered the Guild a booth at the show for the three days if we will man the booth and also provide woodturning demonstrations.
After general discussion the board decided that the Guild did not have enough members at this time to provide staffing and demonstrations for a three day period. However Bob was asked to clarify with the Woodworking Show in order to determine if the booth being offered was to be shared by other woodturning clubs in the metro area or individually to the Guild. If the determination was that the offer was just to the Guild we would decline at this time. If the offer was to share the booth with other clubs then we would coordinate with those clubs and decide on the feasibility. A final decision was deferred until the next board meeting.
Bob had also been contacted by Klingspor who offered to place a link on their website to the Guild’s website, thus giving more exposure to the Guild.
A motion was presented by Tom Smith
- The Guild will allow Klingspor to place a link to the Guild on their website and if as a condition they request our membership list we will comply. All Guild members would then receive a discount on all Klingspor products ordered from them.
The motion was seconded by Chris Burfield, put to the vote and approved unanimously.
A general discussion was had on the condition of our library. Tom Smith stated we have eight videos in stock at the moment and that was not enough to create interest from the membership and make the library a viable fund generating option.
A motion was presented by Tom Ruppert
- The Guild will provide $200.00 to purchase additional videos for the library.
The motion was seconded by Harvey Meyer, put to the vote and approved unanimously.
As a follow up to the Klingspor discussion, and since the secretary will be attending the North Carolina Woodturning Symposium at the end of October, he was asked to approach Packard Woodworks – who will be a vendor at the symposium – for a similar arrangement. Chris Burfield agreed to do this and will report back to the board.
Bob Greenberg then asked if there was any new business. There being none he adjourned the meeting at 6.25pm.
_______________________________________________________
At the general meeting later in the evening Bob Greenberg presented the approved board motion on the change to the Atlanta Woodturners Guild by-laws.
The motion was read in full to the membership and placed to the vote.
With a show of hands the motion was approved unanimously by the membership.
The approved motion to change the by-laws is repeated below for those members that did not attend the September meeting or did not have an opportunity to read the original motion.
“The existing Atlanta Woodturners Guild by -laws should be amended as follows. Effective 01 January 2010 Officers of the Guild will be 1. The President 2. The Vice President 3. The Treasurer 4. The Secretary. In addition there will be three additional Board Members. The retiring President, with the remaining two Board Members to be elected by the general membership. All four officers and the two board members are to be elected by the general membership for a period of one year. It is not a requirement to have previously served as a director to become an officer of the Guild.”
Respectfully submitted,
Chris Burfield
Secretary
