Woodcraft - Alpharetta

Meeting Notice – January 21, 2009

Fellow Turners:   It is very important that you mark your calendars for our next meeting which will be on Wednesday January 21, 7PM at Woodcraft.  Our program Chairman, Harvey Meyer has once again gotten us an outstanding demonstrator for the evening.  Mike Mahoney is flying in and doing  a workshop at Highland Hardware and will be coming out to our club.  What a treat.  The meeting will be devoted almost exclusively to his demonstration.

Your Board of Directors has approved some much needed membership rules and some needed changes on how we get the meetings started now that we have grown.  See the previous post for details.  The Board would like as many of you as possible to arrive at our meetings at 6:45 PM.  The raffle prizes will be displayed and we will begin selling raffle tickets early so that we maximize the demonstrators time.  For January we will have a brief introduction, show and tell, a short break to allow for last minute raffle ticket sales and a cookie and then we will get right into the demonstration.

There will be no President’s Challenge.  Within the past few days there was on article in the AJC about new rules for lead free finishes in toys and how they effect small toy makers even those who put no finish on their products or may finish them with beeswax.  In making things for my grandchildren I only use American Made products which clearly state on the label lead free.  When using a product for the first time I get a Materials Safety Data Sheet from the manufacturer ( they are free )  just for my peace of mind. For your turnings that may come in contact with food there was an excellent article in the Spring 2008 publication of American Woodturner and I recommend that everyone read it.  ( For those of you who are new members of our club and the American Association of Woodturners and did not get this article I will make a copy of the article for you upon your request )  I go on and on about the value received from AAW membership.  Well , this article alone was worth the cost of membership.  The magazine is outstanding.  Remember, we are a chapter of the American Association of Woodturners and as such everyone is suppost to be a member of the parent organization.

May you and your families enjoy a very Happy and Healthy  New Year.

Bob  //   Robert F. Greenberg , Club President
