Our chapter of AAW was officially formed one year ago ( July 25th,2007 ) and I am so very proud of all the hard work that has gone into making our club a success. Our membership has grown steadily all due to your individual support. We exist in no small part to the continued support of Woodcraft and I can’t thank them enough for helping make this all possible. As a founding member and the club’s first president I hope I have set a direction for the club that will enable it to grow and prosper long into the future. We exist because of our common enjoyment in woodworking and especially the art of turning. WOOD ! The varieties and colors astonish, its usefulness unlimited and , when cared for, it can last for hundreds if not thousands of years. Mother nature even petrified it so that it would last forever.
THE PRESIDENT’S CHALLENGE
We exist because of the kindness of others. We , in turn, can in our own small way, repay that kindness and brighten the lives of a few who are less fortunate. I have attached some idea plans for toys that have an element of woodturning in them. You can make these or any other item you may deem child appropriate to be presented to the Childrens’ Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite. They are to be constructed using maple and left unfinished. Children who are there for extended periods of time attend classes. These items will be distributed in class along with non-toxic markers and the children will be able to personalize them. You have 60 days to complete the challenge.
Today while driving I was listening to AM 750 and they were having their annual telethon to raise money for cancer care and research at the AFLAC Cancer Center at Childrens’ Healthcare. They were talking about the kids walking around attached to life giving equipment and how every child had a smile. Well, I expect big things from our club because we are going to put a smile on a lot of children’s faces.
I am sending along pictures and notes about how to make the trees. My goal is at least 100 trees and an equal amount of toys. The Web Master will post the directions for the trains. Remember, be creative and enjoy yourself. Any child appropriate toy is OK. If you have woodworker friends get them to help.
