Presidents Message – March

Fellow Turners: If you receive this message the good news is that my computer is finally working again. Last week’s electrical storm took my hard drive for a wild ride.

I want to thank everyone who participated in the February raffle and especially those who make donations of items. It was our best yet and the club is investing in additional chairs for your viewing comfort.

Once again our program Chairman, Harvey Meyer, came to the rescue and was able to arrange a wonderful last minute demonstration when the scheduled demonstrator had to cancel. Mark Sillay, Wood Turning Artist and Instructor did a demonstration that was informative for all skill levels. Today I actually reground an old bowl gouge which I will use in making my piece for the President’s challenge. Mark also has a wood warehouse and one can purchase turning wood. His telephone # is 404-556-1736 and shopping is by appointment only.

Our next meeting is Wednesday March 19th at 7PM at the Woodcraft Store in Roswell. Come early and make your purchases for without their support our club would not exist. And on top of their hospitality our club received two beautiful pieces of wood for our raffle from Woodcraft. Remember the challenge for March is to turn a bowl with an outside diameter not to exceed 2 inches. These little bowls have loads of uses especially for small items such as storing lady’s earrings for the evening.

At the February meeting the club voted to proceed with a club shirt. I sent the logo that Harvey designed to the shirt maker and was advised that it is very doable. I expect to have prices for a good quality, mid-weight denim, long sleeve shirt with embroidered logo at the next meeting.

Last, but certainly not least, I am very proud to advise our club that the American Association of Woodturners has approved our application for an education grant. If you haven’t already joined please take a few minutes to do so. The web address is Woodturner.org and simply follow the links to membership. The board has many goals and will review its options so that our club both meets its fiduciary responsibility to AAW and provides continuing education.
